Today I would like to share how I incorporate salad into my regular diet. I stared minimizing the amount of refined carbs I introduce into my diet about 3 years ago. It can be quite challenging because for most of us a typical diet includes refined carbs which usually make up a big portion of the meal, whether it be in the form of bread for breakfast or rice/pasta for lunch or dinner. Unrefined carbs in the form of Salad/Greens are usually a very small portion of the meal or a side dish if present at all.
My daily meals now include unrefined carbs in the form of vegetables & salad as the core dish, with protein as the side dish. Which means vegetables make a huge bulk of my diet.
One thing I try to keep in mind when making my salad is to make sure I include a variety of vegetables. I use what is know as the “rainbow” technique to make sure me & my family are getting a wide variety of nutrients. This includes making sure the vegetables I do include in our diet contain a wide range of color.
My goal for the day is usually 10 servings of vegetables and fruits and this is done throughout the day through main courses and snacks at regular intervals.
Vegetables are extremely important to our diet because they contain phytonutrients which naturally help our bodies prevent diseases. The phytonutrients are what gives vegetables that bitter taste we tend to hate Btw did you know that phytonutrients are what protects young plants from being eaten by small animals? It acts as a natural insect repellant or pesticide in turn maximizing the chances of reproduction? Isn’t it funny how Mother Nature works? While the same bitter taste serves as a repellent to other animals thus protecting the plants as they grow, it naturally helps us fight diseases and keeps us healthy! You just gotta love Mother Nature
Here is a great salad recipe I recently made. This one includes Spinach, Avocado and Grapefruit as its main ingredients.
In a bowl of baby spinach I simply added diced avocado & grapefruit.
I decided to sprinkle in some flaxseeds, ginger, garlic and drizzle in some olive oil. The final dish was just absolutely heaven to my taste buds! A mix of sweet and tangy
Have a wonderful week ahead & thanks for stopping by ♥,
Much Love & Blessings,
