The “What Is Love?” Challenge

what is love

Last week while having my Daily Devotion, I began contemplating on the TRUE meaning of LOVE. This is something I’ve been contemplating on a lot this past year…I know it’s October and technically not February – “The official Month Of LOVE”…but I really felt compelled to start a challenge on learning more about God’s definition of “TRUE LOVE”…

I believe the reason we have so much problems, pain, sorrow and injustices in the world today, is because we are turning further and further away from God’s LOVE and as we know GOD IS LOVE.

1 John 4 :8

He who does not love, does not know God, for God is love.

Sin separates us from God and hinders us from experiencing TRUE LOVE, and we can see the manifestation of this today through wars, crimes, hatred, racism, senseless murders, terrorism, sexual immorality, broken homes, abuse, low self worth, low self esteem, fear, anxiety, depression, suicide, jealousy, anger, greed, selfishness, love of money, power & fame above all else, and I could go on and on but you get the gist…

All you have to do is focus on the news to recognize that we need God and HIS LOVE, NOW more than ever before…

I believe the bible is the most important book ever written, it is filled with God’s wisdom and is basically an instruction manual for anything that we encounter in life…so I’d like to devote the month of October to truly learning about LOVE from the greatest Author of LOVE - GOD.

Before I share a little more about the challenge…I’d just like to share a little story that happened to me, and I think this is something a lot of you may be able to relate to…

I was going through a break up with an Ex and I was so heart broken because, I felt betrayed… I felt like I had invested so much of my time, energy and made a lot of sacrifices for this person and the relationship…I was loyal…and I gave all that I could humanly possibly give of myself…yet this person betrayed me…

so out of my pain and frustration I asked him…”Did you ever really love me?” because I could not comprehend how this person could not value the relationship we had….and his answer to me was…”What Is Love?”

At this point I was flabbergasted…because I was like, well…if you have to ask me “What is Love?”…then what have we been doing all these years…IMHO I thought everybody understands what love is…

at the time although I was a Christian by name, I had turned my back away from God, my relationship with him was really…non-existent…looking back at that relationship, I now understand that if my relationship with God was STRONG, I would’ve known that this person did not LOVE me…and there wasn’t even a point of asking him…I would’ve been able to figure that out really fast too… without having to invest too much into the relationship….because I would understand what TRUE LOVE really means and how it looks like…

The point of this story is…we are living in a time where a lot of us don’t really understand what LOVE is… we may say the words, ” I LOVE YOU ” but don’t really comprehend the magnitude of the words…or what they really mean…we don’t really know how to express LOVE to others or even to ourselves…

we may have an idea of what it is…at least the version that we have been taught by “the world”…but we don’t know what TRUE LOVE is… as the Lord intended it to be…we don’t practice it…nor experience it…and if we don’t even know what it is…how can we share it with others?

and this is where the challenge comes in…I’d love to invite you to join me every day for the next 29 days (the challenge was originally created for February :) )…. and I will be sharing a bible verse on LOVE, and I will also share any thoughts that are placed in my heart concerning LOVE…

I hope and pray that by the end of this challenge, that the Holy Spirit teaches us and reveal to us the TRUE meaning of LOVE… that we will all be blessed with a deeper understanding of how much GOD LOVES US and what HIS definition and blueprint of LOVE is. I also hope and pray that this challenge will draw us closer to God and will help us build a greater relationship with God, teach us how to LOVE him, LOVE others and LOVE ourselves…

As we go through this challenge I also propose that we pray for more and more people to experience the LOVE OF GOD and that the world becomes a better place for it…

If you’d like to follow along on the challenge I will be sharing the bible verses here on my blog, on Social Media as well as a video on my YouTube Channel

You can write the verses in your Journal, write them on post it notes or cards and reflect on them throughout the day. You can also use them as part of your prayers.

I’m using the True Love Bible reading challenge created by Rachel WoJo you can find her original post here

Dee, one of the things I’ve seen is that many people confuse love with need. It would have been interesting to ask: Did you need me? Unfortunately, many people have been conditioned to think that if someone can fulfill their needs, that is love. It’s a systemic problem, today. You can see it with many people. As soon as you say no, or as soon as you can’t help them with a need, they turn on you. Why is that? Could it be they needed you, rather than loved you?
Thanks for sharing these thoughts and ideas. I love contemplating life’s issues as well.

WOW, you hit the nail right on the head, that is very true!!! In this particular case unfortunately I do believe they did confuse Need with Love…Once I could no longer fulfill their certain needs…and it was I who needed them…that’s when things went sour. Thank you for sharing that and for your support, glad to hear you enjoy the content XOXO
