MHM FAQ – What are the Signs of Maximum Hydration?

 msdeekay-maxhydration-lacetopHi luvs,

Happy Thursday, to all my american readers I hope you’re having a wonderful Thanksgiving :) Thanksgiving isn’t celebrated here in Sweden but I think no matter where you’re from it’s important to wake up each day with gratitude.

Sometimes in life we can be so run down and overwhelmed by our daily problems that we may forget that there is so much to be thankful for.

Today, I’m grateful for being alive, for my family, friends, for health, for having food and shelter and for you my luvs :)

In today’s post, I wanted to go over another frequently asked question concerning the Max Hydration Method. I get a lot of questions concerning reaching Max Hydration especially from those who’re just starting the regimen, considering starting the regimen or for those who have seen my pictures/videos.

4c-texture-maxhydration-msdeekay-washango

Below are the most frequently asked questions:

How long does it take to reach Maximum Hydration?

How long did it take you to get to Maximum Hydration?

How do you know that your hair has reached Maximum Hydration?/what are the signs of reaching Maximum Hydration?

I think most people who have these questions, essentially want to know:

  •  For how long do they have to keep doing the regimen?

and I think others want to know

  • How long will it be before they see the results and/or their hair stays moisturized?

My own understanding of Max Hydration is that its the state of the hair when the whole strand of hair from root to tip is able to hold on to moisture and as a result there is elimination of frizz.

Signs of this include:

  • Root to tip curl definition with no product in the hair.
  • Soft, moisturized hair.

I personally don’t think that I’ve reached maximum hydration on all the strands of my head, I would say perhaps 90% of my hair has reached max hydration and I have some areas which are just a little bit stubborn and are taking longer than expected :) which I’m absolutely fine with, I’m in no hurry whatsoever LOL because I know my hair is on the right track.

But I think some people do think that once Max Hydration is reached, their hair can never be or will never be dry again…which is not true. Upon reaching Max hydration, you will have to continue maintaining the hydration levels in your hair. At this point of your hair journey, you’ll have to make sure that your hair doesn’t lose the moisture you’ve worked so hard for. You will have to find the right balance, to ensure that you maintain optimum hydration levels in your hair. Because neglecting your hair could lead to setbacks in hydration.

That being said, it should be much easier maintaining hydration levels if you stay consistent in hydrating your hair and staying on top of your hair’s health and moisture levels. I think this is where learning your hair and knowing how much it can take and how it reacts is very important.

Aketafitgirl has a video where she talks about  factors that need to be taken into consideration in order to reach Maximum Curl Hydration as per the Curly Girl Method. These are things that help eliminate dryness in the hair:

1. Eliminating products with ingredients that are drying to the hair egs: Sulphates, Sillicones, Drying Alcohols etc

She doesn’t mention ingredients that affect Low porosity hair, because she isn’t Low Porosity but I just wanted to add if you are, make sure you also take note of things like proteins, Aloe Vera, Coconut Oil etc you can see a full list of ingredients to avoid as recommended by the Max Hydration Method on the Maximum Hydration Product List Page.

2. Find out if you have Hard Water in your area.

Now this is something that I think is often overlooked. I think if you’ve tried almost everything and you’re still having issues with dry hair, it’s worth looking into your water. If you do have hard water, it may be working against your efforts to hydrate your hair because the minerals in the water can cause build up in your hair and hard water is also known to have a higher PH than regular water

3. Protein sensitivity.

This ties in with point number 1, if you’re protein sensitive, you want to make sure that the ingredients in your products do not contain proteins which may cause your hair to be dry, frizzy or hard.

4. PH Balanced products.

5. How often are you rehydrating/reintroducing moisture/water into your hair?

According to Pinkecube, the creator of the Max Hydration Method Regimen:

To me maximum hydration is when your hair defines root to tip with no product except water. When this happens, you will get to use much less product, and do much less coaxing to get your curl to form. I estimate max hydration probably takes 25-60 days of you actively doing the regimen to get so long as for the first 7 regimen tries, you are not spacing the pace you actively repeat the regimen to longer than 3 days. I believe it can take this amount of time to reach total max hydration on every strand, also depending on your hair type. So if you have different curl patterns they may reach max hydration faster. Each clump gets there at a different pace.

So there you have it :) I hope this answers your questions :) I think the most important thing is to enjoy the journey and not to get too focused on the destination. Just enjoy your hair on the way. Do as much as you can to hydrate your hair and learn it’s likes and dislikes in the process. I think as long as you do all that,  you should be on the right track :)

Thank you so much for stopping by and a wonderful Thanksgiving to you and yours :)

XOXO,

Dee

Save money and get Rhassoul Clay in bulk from bulkapothecary

Hi luvs,

I just wanted to say I love you guys so much :) You always send me the most amazing tips and emails, so I thought why not start sharing some of your tips, qns etc here on the blog :)

Today’s tip I’m sure is one most of you will surely enjoy because it’s all about saving money :)

The clay rinse is one of my favourite steps of the Max Hydration Method, I love how the clay is able to detox and remove buildup from my hair. It also helps to clump my curls, which makes it easier to moisturize, seal and style my hair.

msdeekay_maxhydrationmethod_clayrinse.jpg

Since I started using clay I’ve only used Bentonite Clay and you can find the recipe I use which is recommended for the Max Hydration Method Regimen on my “Benefits of  using Clay on Natural Hair” post. However, Bentonite Clay can be a bit strong and stripping to some naturals. If this is the case for you, you probably want to try using a more conditioning clay like Rhassoul Clay or the other clays on the MHM Recommended list. You’re also free to experiment with how often you do the clay rinse  and other clay recipes available online. According to other naturals, Rhassoul Clay has better conditioning properties as compared to Bentonite Clay. But, Rhassoul Clay  is also more expensive…

ghassoul rhassoul clay

So, I was excited when Chasity, sent me an email with the following tip :)

I also wanted you to mention to your followers where they can get the Rhassoul Clay  for cheap! It is much more expensive than the other clays but when I tried it, it left my hair softer so I definitely wanted to keep using it but couldn’t really afford to keep purchasing it for $15 for 8oz!!!

Please share with your followers to go to BulkApothecary to order the Rhassoul Clay.
you can get to 2lbs for $20!!! this includes shipping!! so it comes out really cheap!!
Hope this helps some of your followers!!

Thank you so much for sharing Chasity :)

The theme behind my blog, youtube and social media has always been about sharing those things I love. Therefore, I feel so blessed that I’m able to form a community based on this same belief…as we all know sharing is caring :)

If you want to see a comparison of the Rhassoul Clay vs the Bentonite Clay check out Protectiveprincess’s video below:

Have you tried both clays or any of the other clays on the MHM Recommended Product List? If you have, please share any experiences or any tips that you may have in the comments below and if  you have any tips you’d love to me to share with others please send me an email at msdeekay2012 at gmail dot com

Thanks for stopping by,

Have a great Wednesday and stay blessed,

XOXO,

Dee

Max Hydration Feature – Neuyogi, A 4c Natural

Hi luvs,

Happy Tuesday :) Today, I’ll be sharing another Max Hydration Feature, I really enjoy putting these together and reading everyone’s natural hair journeys and experiences with MHM, I hope these help inspire you in your own journeys as well :)

How long have you been natural?

On and off since 2006. I texturized twice in 2007 and 2008. Cut off the last of the texturized ends in 2010.

Why did you decided to go natural?

  • Relaxers hurt me no matter how mild.
  • Hair thinned and never got past chin/neck length.

What are your experiences being natural?

My experiences being natural are an entire post on their own. In a nutshell, my natural hair has been healthier than my permed hair so I have kept at this journey. But overall I have struggled with accepting my texture, being a product junkie and poor length retention. Most of my years of being natural, I was stuck in a rut of 6-8 inches, (which takes some people less than a year to achieve). 2013-2014 I made it to 10 inches thanks to all the changes I made in technique I think. Incorporating clay, steaming, protein treatments and protective styling have helped.

Please, tell us a little bit about your hair, like your hair type, porosity, texture, length?

Type 4 (I believe 4c), fine strands, medium density, low porosity, 10-11 inches.

What were some of your struggles (if any) being natural before MHM?

My ends & length retention are the biggest. I am one of those naturals who struggles with my ends endlessly and feel like they always needed trimming. When I go to the hair salon they always give me major trims, which has slowed down my length retention. I thought I was pleased with my hair, in the sense that I had more good hair days than bad hair days. However, my hair was not predictable, most days it was soft and I had an awesome “out” style but then other days it was dry, despite no change in product or technique.

Hair and Texture before MHM

How did you find out about MHM and why did you decide to give it a try?

I watched a YouTube video by protective princess. It made me curious but like most naturals, I have tried wash and go’s, twice in the past (once with Kinky Curly Curling Custard and once with Ecostyler with Argan oil) and both times left my hair a hot mess, exactly like YouTube Glamfun’s satirical video of “wash and go’s don’t work on nappy hair” …a shrunken, matted brillo pad-like mess.

However, on July 9, I had some time off work and figured I’d attempt MHM since I could wash it out if it failed me.
I did it, liked it, but that day I did the regimen with the Cherry Lola and it took me like 4 hrs to complete and 24hrs for my hair to dry. My hair had no crunch, had actual hang time, lots of movement but I wasn’t going to continue it because of the time it took and the drying time.
The hair lasted me all week before I washed it off and went back to my regular protective styling.

On Aug 14th when I took down my goddess braid protective style, I had one of the bad days with dryness, and horrible ends. I also hated thinking of what style to do next for the week. I then remembered my initial MHM result and how I could wear my own hair loose for as long as I wanted and also had the option to do other styles if I got bored without needing any extra special styling product.

That was a light bulb moment. So I started again with the Maximum Hydration Method.

How long have you been doing MHM ?

Since August 14. I did it 3 days straight and then now do twice a week because that is all my laziness will allow.

4chair-after-maximumhydrationmethod

Day 1 hair. Left pics – fully dry. Right pics – pic 1 is fully dry (front dries fastest in 1-2hrs), pic 2 is 70% dry (back and crown take forever and shrinks the most), pic 3 – shed hair from beginning to end of process with a 25c coin for comparison.

What are your experiences with MHM so far?

I have done MHM 9 times so far! I love it because:

  1. Consistent, predictable results!!
  2. No matter the time it takes you to get through the regimen, there are no issues like; “I have to wake up extra early to unravel my twists or flexi rods to see if my results are good and if not what is my back up hair style”.
  3. My only concern when I wake up is; “Is my hair fully dry?” and if not “Oh well it will dry as the day progresses :)”
  4. Endures my workouts, which involves lots of sweating (pics below)
  5.  Easy detangling and less shed hairs than my previous wash days
  6.  My hair does not feel crunchy or sticky despite the gel. There is product…yes but it has a soft hold. I don’t know how to explain it; you will just have to see for yourself if you try it.
  7.  A possible end to my product junkiesm perhaps?
  8.  I LOVE MY OWN HAIR TEXTURE AND COIL PATTERN!

The idea that I am happy with my hair results already and it is supposed to even look better each time I do this regimen blows my mind!

maxhydrationmethod-4c-hair-dry

Pics of day 2 above, and day 3 below after working out both days 3) My ends look great so far, when I thought they were split and questionably unhealthy.

What are your views/experiences and maybe other people’s view of your hair before and after MHM?

Discussed my views above. So far I have received compliments from significant other, mom and friends. One friend started the regimen already and another is on the way, so these are real compliments :)

mhm-8cycles-4chair

MHM wash 8, top pics are wet hair and bottom pics are dry hair. Still have frizz but getting there and love my texture.

Any advice to anyone who is considering trying MHM for the first time or to other naturals in general?

As you read my tweaks and advice below pls bear in mind that you should always refer to the MHM blog for the most accurate and detailed process.

    1. Time – My number one advice to anyone starting the method is don’t let the time or number of steps deter you. The consistent, predictable results make it worth it. Running through all 5 steps takes me 2.5 -3hrs. Most of that time I am doing my chores or reading while the product is on my hair. Actual product application and detangling takes me about 5-10mins.The longest portion for me is step 4-5 since I do small sections and that takes me 45 mins for now. It also helps to make your mixes prior to starting your routine so you don’t waste time mixing on the go.
    2.  Cherry Lola Treatment – I skipped using anything I had to mash up and I liked how my hair felt afterwards. I use yoghurt, molasses, soy amino acids, baking soda and avocado oil.
    3. Clay Treatment – always ended up with lumps after mixing in applicator bottle and mud splatter all over the place during application. So, I bought terressentials, which is no stress but I hate the price. I discovered that with diluted apple cider vinegar, water and clay it was easier to mix. PH was 7 which pinke cube says is ok. My most recent wash I used clay and water alone again but this time in a dishwashing liquid soap bottle instead of applicator bottle and it worked better but the nozzle would still get a small clump of clay stuck in it and I would have to stop and shake the bottle to get it to flow. Doing this multiple times started slowing me down. Eventually I took the cover off and applied the clay to my hands and rubbed on the hair shaft like I would with terressentials. That worked really well.

Thank you so much Neuyogi for sharing your experiences with MHM so far :) To connect with Neuyogi you can find her via her instagram page @ neuyogi
