The only thing that counts in our relationship with God (Day 17) – “What Is Love?” Challenge

the only thing that counts

It’s Day 17 of the “What Is Love? Challenge“, where for 29 days I’m sharing bible verses on Love so that we can gain a deeper understanding of the true meaning of Love according to God’s divine plan.

On Day 16 we talked about Four things we should be praying for…and today we’ll talk about the only thing that counts in our relationship with God.

Galatians 5:1-6 English Standard Version (ESV)

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.

Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace. For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

I was talking to a friend the other day and we were discussing how everyone is a “Guru” of something these days…so many of us are just so lost, searching and seeking for answers…and thanks to the Internet, there’s an answer for anything and everything….whatever it is you’re trying to do…there’s an “Expert” out there, ready to give you the winning formula….

Most of us live our lives governed by a set of “formulas”…. It’s how we think we can at least determine we’re doing this thing called life correctly. It’s how we measure our success. It puts our mind at ease knowing that we’re headed on the right track. It at least gives us the sense of security and control that we seek.

From the moment you’re a child, you’re told go to school, earn great grades, work hard, get married and have children by a certain age and eventually everything will fall in place…but we soon realize that’s not necessarily true.

Life is unpredictable…and what works for one person may not necessarily work for everyone, sometimes we take a wrong turn…a detour and it sets us on a path we really never set on embarking and that’s the beauty of life.

But wouldn’t it be so boring if we all lived the same exact life, based on the same exact series of formulas…we wouldn’t be able to share the unique experiences that makes the world so rich with history, culture and diversity. These unique experiences is what life is really about, it’s what makes us human….

It’s the same thing with our relationship with God…some of us try to do this Christian thing by living according to a set of Formulas…we live our lives governed by a set of laws…we have a checklist and we say, if we do this or that and that…then we believe we’re “good” Christians…

But Paul warned the Galatians about this…he reminds us that we do not have to “Earn” our way to a relationship with God or into heaven, based on laws…because Christ already set us FREE.

If we do live our Christian lives based on a formula then we’re really just slaves and we’re actually forfeiting God’s gift of grace. It’s not something we can “Earn”, because God already gave us his grace and love through Jesus Christ who set us free when he died for us on the cross.

So how can we measure our Christianity then? how can we know we’re doing the right thing by God? Paul says laws don’t count…

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

So once again it all boils down to LOVE…ultimately all the formulas and laws don’t matter if we don’t live our lives as an embodiment of God’s love.

God Bless you,

XOXO

Why Prayer and reading the Bible is IMPORTANT (Day 14) – “What Is Love? Challenge”

psalm25

Merry Christmas Everyone, I hope you and your loved ones had a peaceful and wonderful day celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ Our Saviour and our Lord.

Today is Day 14 of the “What Is Love?” Challenge where for 29 days, I’ll be sharing bible verses on Love, so we can gain a deeper understanding of the True meaning of Love according to God’s divine plan.

On Day 13 we talked about how God acts as a shield and protects us from our enemies. Today’s verses are another prayer asking God to teach us and instructs us in his ways. Today we’ll discuss why Prayer and reading the bible is so important in our spiritual life and in building our relationship with God.

Psalm 25 : 1 – 10 English Standard Version (ESV)

25 To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
O my God, in you I trust;
    let me not be put to shame;
    let not my enemies exult over me.
Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame;
    they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
    for you I wait all the day long.

Remember your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love,
    for they have been from of old.
Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
    according to your steadfast love remember me,
    for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!

Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
He leads the humble in what is right,
    and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
    for those who keep his covenant and his testimonies.

As human beings we are born of sin, this is our nature, we are imperfect and are bound to fall in the trap of sin. After all we are all sinners and have fallen short of the Glory Of God ( Romans 3 :23)

If we want to live a life that’s pleasing to God,  and we want to build a strong relationship with him, we definitely need his help, we need to reach out to him and ask for his guidance and instruction. Because he is the only PERFECT being… he alone is QUALIFIED to be our ultimate teacher.

One way we can do this is through prayer!!! Prayer is the only link we have to God. Through prayer we can ask for his guidance and we can also receive instruction and this is why having a strong and consistent prayer life is so important.

Another way we can receive God’s instruction is through reading the bible. The bible is our manual, it’s God’s word and his instruction on how we should live. Through it we learn a lot about God’s character, his love for us, life lessons and what he wants for our spiritual life and relationship with him.

There are numerous examples in the bible of God providing us with his guidance. This is part of how God shows us that he loves us.

Since the beginning at the garden of Eden, we see God instructing Adam on how he and his wife should live and when Adam and Eve fail, of course there are consequences for their actions but God does not give up on us.

We also see God giving Moses the 10 Commandments, a set of rules on how we should live to please him and to live well with others.

And as if all this wasn’t enough God sends his one and only son Jesus Christ to teach and demonstrate to us how we should live and of course he also gifts us with the Holy Spirit who continues to guide and teach us even after the departure of Jesus Christ.

psalm25

Today, let’s focus on thanking God for his instruction and guidance. Let’s ask him to grant us a humble heart that will seek and receive his instruction. AMEN

God Bless you,

XOXO

He shields us from our enemies (Day 13 ) – “What Is Love? Challenge”

lead-me-in-the-right-path

It’s Day 13 of the “What Is Love?” Challenge where for 29 days, I’ll be sharing bible verses on Love, so we can gain a deeper understanding of the True meaning of Love according to God’s divine plan.

On Day 12, we learnt that although God’s love for us stays the same regardless of our love for him, once we acknowledge his love, in order to strengthen our relationship with him we are required to fear him, walk in his ways, love him, serve him with all of our heart and soul and keep his commandments and statutes.

Today’s verses are a prayer to God to shield us and lead us in righteousness in the midst of our battles with enemies…

Psalm 5:7-12 English Standard Version (ESV)

But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love,
    will enter your house.
I will bow down toward your holy temple
    in the fear of you.
Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness
    because of my enemies;
    make your way straight before me.

For there is no truth in their mouth;
    their inmost self is destruction;
their throat is an open grave;
    they flatter with their tongue.
10 Make them bear their guilt, O God;
    let them fall by their own counsels;
because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out,
    for they have rebelled against you.

11 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
    let them ever sing for joy,
and spread your protection over them,
    that those who love your name may exult in you.
12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord;
    you cover him with favor as with a shield.

In some of the previous posts we talked about how God commands us to love others and we even spoke about how we need to forgive our “enemies” which is really, really hard to do….

When people cause us hurt and pain, it’s easy to get caught up in bitterness, anger, resentment and a deep need for them to suffer for everything they have done to us.

I love today’s verses because it is a direct answer to this problem…it tells us exactly how we should deal with those who’ve hurt us and caused us pain.

Today’s verses are David’s prayer to the Lord, as he was dealing with his enemies…he brought his situation to the Lord and this is exactly how we are supposed to deal with it even today.

We are called to go to our loving father in prayer and ask him to lead us in righteousness, as we deal with our enemies.

We are reminded that our father HATES evildoers, he DESTROYS those that speak lies, he ABHORS the bloodthirsty and deceitful man….

A quick search on the meaning of ABHORS says it means…

to regard with disgust and hatred.

Sometimes we get so caught up in what others have done to us that we forget that we serve a POWERFUL God who is JUST and RIGHTEOUS. And this God loves us so much…if he actually ABHORS the bloodthirsty and deceitful man, would he really just stand by and let our enemies cause us pain and not avenge us?

psalm 5

We need to ask ourselves, what would we do if someone we loved so dearly was in pain? and this pain was caused by somone who actually sought to hurt our loved one maliciously? Of course we would protect our loved one and attempt to bring justice on their behalf…wouldn’t our father in heaven do so much more than we would?

This is more than enough to give us peace…

Today let’s thank God for he is a righteous and just God who delights in good and abhors evil. Let us ask him for his healing, guidance, peace, faith and shield of love as we deal with our enemies.

Peace be with you,

Stay Blessed,

XOXO,

Dee

But Do YOU Love God? (Day 12) – “What Is Love?” Challenge

deut-10-12-300x300
It’s Day 12 of the “What Is Love?” Challenge where for 29 days, I’ll be sharing bible verses on Love, so we can gain a deeper understanding of the True meaning of Love according to God’s divine plan.

On Day 11 we were reminded that God ALWAYS fights our battles, protects us and provides for us. Today’s verses tell us what our role is and what our requirements are in our relationship with God.

Deuteronomy 10:12-15 (ESV)

12 “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,13 and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today for your good? 14 Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it. 15 Yet the Lord set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day.

Throughout this challenge we’ve mostly spoken about how God loves us, but we all know that one sided love or any relationship where one party does most of the work simply doesn’t work!!! at some point in time, the one who does all the work will feel unappreciated, unloved, uncared for and this will eventually strain the relationship.

It works the same way with our relationship with God, although God loves us just because we are his creation…there is nothing really we need to do to prove our worthiness to him, because in his eyes we already are worthy and he has “paid the ultimate price” for our salvation through Jesus Christ our saviour and our Lord.

….but once we acknowledge this, we need to work on our relationship with God and if we are to strengthen our relationship with him there are some actions we need to take, there are some things that he requires from us…

He REQUIRES that:

We FEAR him,

We WALK in his WAYS,

We LOVE him,

We SERVE him with ALL our HEART & SOUL,

We Keep his COMMANDMENTS & STATUTES…

and all this is for our own good!!!

This is how we keep our end of our relationship with God, this is how we show that we LOVE him, this is the least we can do for a God who is WORTHY of all the Worship & Praise, him who all the heavens, earths and all that’s in it belongs to…

Today let’s thank God that with him we are worthy of all his LOVE, MERCY & GRACE and that we do not have to prove ourselves to him, thank God that with him, we are more than enough!!! and ask him to help us strengthen our relationship with him by fearing him, walking in his ways, loving him, serving him with all our heart and soul and keeping his commandments and statutes and knowing that we’re doing this for our own good… AMEN

Stay Blessed,

XOXO
