For most people, marriage is a life goal…for most women this takes on a whole other level, since we’re little girls, we’ve been fantasizing, role playing with dolls, dreaming of taking on the role of a wife and mother…

Fairytales like “cinderella”, “beauty and the beast” and “snow white” make us long for the day our prince charming will show up and we’ll ultimately live that fairy tale happily ever after… and when we grow older we continue with this longing through romantic novels, movies and TV, but reality is often very different from our expectations…

We often think about the final destination and forget to think about what it exactly means to be in a marriage…most of us think, marriage should make us happy, that our significant other should meet all our needs, satisfy all our requirements, fulfil the longing and desires we have, make our dreams come true…and that’s a tall order to fill…the reality is selfishness has no place in a marriage…marriage is about two becoming one, mind, body and soul…not each person in the marriage trying to convert the other person into doing what they want them to do…

God intended for marriage to be a ministry, where we learn to be more and more like him…to reflect the love that he has for his bride…

Today, I wanted to share a quote from Paul Washer on, the “Meaning Of Marriage” this is not a popular view of what marriage is…but it is what God intended for it to be…

The Meaning Of Marriage

“How would you ever learn unconditional love if you were married to someone who met all the conditions? How would you ever learn mercy, patience, long-suffering, heartfelt compassion if you were married to someone who never failed you, who was never difficult with you, who never sinned against you, who was never slow to acknowledge their sin or ask for forgiveness? How would you ever learn grace to pour out your favor on someone who did not deserve it if you were married to someone who was always deserving of all good things? The main purpose of marriage is that, through your marriage, you become conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. Marriage, I believe, is the greatest instrument of sanctification.”

- Paul Washer, God’s Glory in Marriage

Ephesians 5:25-33 (NKJV)

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Love Always,

XOXO

There is a COST for LOVE…(Day 26) What Is Love? Challenge

you are not of this worldImage Source : Love Changes Everything

When we become christians and decide to live a life of submission and LOVE to God there is always a price to pay. We must always decide between choosing a life that is temporarily “fulfilling” or to look at the bigger picture and decide to have an ETERNAL mindset….

In today’s scriptures (Day 26 Of the What Is Love? Challenge) Jesus says, that once we follow him we should expect to be hated by this world just as it hated him…

John 15:14-21  (ESV)

14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants,  for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17 These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

18 “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21 But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.

There are four main ideas in today’s scriptures, the first one being our relationship with God. Jesus says, we are no longer servants of God/Jesus but friends. This is because there is now transparency in our relationship, servants usually receive orders from their masters and just accept is as it is, without really understanding why. But Jesus became the living word, he restored our relationship with God and gave us wisdom and understanding concerning God’s plan.

Secondly, Jesus specifically chose and appointed us to bear fruit…bearing fruit means we are to conceive that which is filled within us due to his wisdom and love. When we bear fruit, we receive power and authority from God. Because of this whatever we ask in Jesus’ name, as long as it is within God’s WILL, it will be granted to us.

Third, we’re reminded once again TO LOVE EACH OTHER, this is the greatest command. Ultimately it all comes down to this…if we don’t get anything else Jesus has taught us or understand anything about God’s plan, we shall always default to LOVE, that’s what it’s all about.

Last, naturally the world will hate what we stand for, if they hated Jesus to the point of crucifying him, and he was perfect in every single way…then what of us mere humans who are flawed and just trying to follow his footsteps? we can’t chose to follow Jesus and expect the world to love us, because we stand for different things…the world does not know God or respect his word so it won’t understand what we’re about, love us or respect what we stand for. We must always remember we are NOT of this WORLD, we are of GOD, living in this world, which is temporary and fickle, all will pass but he remains the same – TODAY, TOMORROW and FOREVER more…choose your side wisely.

Love always,

XOXO

Love Is Sacrificial…(Day 25) What Is Love? Challenge

love is sacrificial

When most of us think about LOVE, we often think about it in the context of romantic relationships…we think of the emotions that come with “falling in love” with someone. But in today’s scriptures (Day 25 – What Is Love? Challenge),  we learn that God’s definition of Love is SACRIFICE…it’s not a feeling that grows hot or cold based on how other people treat us… love doesn’t cease to exist because our emotions have grown cold…it’s a constant CHOICE we have to make.

John 15:9-13 (ESV)

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Naturally, we have a hard time following God’s commandments because it goes against our fleshy sinful nature. But if we LOVE God and want to abide in his LOVE we have to make the conscious choice to keep his commandments, that’s the only way we can find true joy in this world.

Jesus says, we’re to show the same type of love to one another, we have to consciously make the choice to love one another even when we don’t feel like it…this is LOVE.

If you’re a parent or are married, then you know that a lot of times you have to do things that you don’t feel like doing…you have to wake up in the middle of the night to soothe a crying baby, or a sick child while, you had a stressful day, are sick yourself or while you’d rather catch up on sleep.

You have to wake up early in the morning before everyone else and make sure you get everything ready for your family, to start the day…all these actions are those of LOVE…sometimes your children will test your limits because of their defiant behaviour but you CHOSE to continue loving them anyway. Sometimes your spouse will disappoint you and hurt you but you have to chose to continue loving them anyway… LOVE is INTENTIONAL, we chose to love others inspite of their flaws.

When we chose to follow God’s commandments we’re building the muscle of SACRIFICE, OBEDIENCE, SUBMISSION and LOVE, if we can be OBEDIENT to God, if we can SUBMIT to God and LOVE him, then it becomes easier to do the same for others.

Jesus says, the greatest life is laying one’s life for his own friends…this is what Jesus did, he left his Holy throne of Majesty, to take upon a human body, to live like we do, to be tempted like we do, to experience shame, pain and suffering like we do…

Even though Jesus was God and loved humanity deeply and was willing to give up his own life as a sacrifice, he was also human and his human side was weak…he had to fast and pray intensely to overcome his flesh. He asked God if there was any other way he can save humanity without having to “drink from the cup” of suffering but ultimately he surrendered and submitted to God’s will. He chose to be obedient and sacrifice his own life for his “friends”.

Luke 22:42 (ESV)

42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

We may not have to go to this extent to show LOVE for others but we’re still called to “carry ” our cross each day, to cast aside our pride and ego, to overcome our carnal needs and desires, to “die” to ourselves each day, to “crucify” our sinful nature each day and to CHOSE to submit and obey God’s commandments, this is how we LOVE God and others.

Love always,

XOXO,

 Dee

Love One Another (Day 9) – “What Is Love?” Challenge

daily-devotionals-jesus-loves-all   It’s Day 9 of the “What Is Love?” Challenge where for 29 days I’ll be sharing bible verses in an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of the True meaning of Love according to God’s Divine Plan.

On Day 8 we read a beautiful declaration of God’s Love for us and we spoke about our worth in his eyes. Today’s verse is another reminder to love each other,

John 13:34-35 English Standard Version (ESV)

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Today’s reading emphasizes on loving others, this is a lesson we’ve had over and over through this challenge so far on Day 1, Day 4, Day 6 and Day 7… this goes to show just how important loving one another is…

The background story of today’s reading…it was almost time for Jesus to leave the world and return to his father…he already knew this but his disciples had no idea what was about to come….during his last supper with the disciples, he gave them a few words of advice…

IMO this was really his way of saying Goodbye…he wanted them to know what he wanted to happen in his absence…if they were to do anything or had learnt anything at all from him…this was the most important thing he wanted them to know….. He wanted us to love one another…

jesus-washing-apostles-feet-39588-wallpaper

One symbolic thing he did during the supper was wash his disciples feet…he humbled himself and served them…and he was also about to do the biggest sacrifice ever done…all in the name of LOVE…he was about to pay the ultimate price for our sins by giving up his precious life…

He gave us a living example of what love should look like, love should be unconditional, love involves being humble, casting aside our pride and egos, love is sacrificial…as the Son of God, the disciples were the ones who were supposed to wash his feet, but he washed their feet to demonstrate that love requires serving others, it requires submission, humility, love demonstrates care to others, love requires obedience and love requires forgiveness. Jesus knew that one of the disciples was about to betray him which would lead to his crucifixion but he also trusted that this was part of God’s bigger plan and God was about to turn all that evil for our good…

Jesus demonstrated to us TRUE LOVE and he set an example for us as to what LOVE should look like.

And he says…as his followers, loving others, is our badge, when we love others the way he loved us, we demonstrate pure christ like love and this way we are living examples of what God embodies…LOVE.

Today let’s pray that God helps us to cast aside our pride and ego, to help us serve others in love, to help us submit, obey and humble ourselves before others in love and ask him to help us as his disciples be living examples of what it means to truly love as he loved us.

Stay Blessed,

XOXO Dee
